5 things every potential mentor should know:

1
Being a mentor is easy. All you need is Zoom!

2
Compassion is the best credential.

"How are you?"

To know that someone genuinely cares can be life-saving. But sometimes we don’t ask, because we don’t know how to handle the answer.

  • How are you feeling?
  • What are your concerns at the moment?
  • Do you have immediate problems we can discuss?
  • Is there anything you need?
  • When is your next appointment?
  • What else is going on in your life besides pregnancy?
  • Do you want guidance, or someone to listen, or both?

As a maternity mentor, you are trained not only to ask questions like these, but to cultivate an enriching relationship through your conversations. No judgement. Just your presence.

The need is real.
Every child needs a supportive mother. But who supports her?
  • Approximately half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned.
  • 68% of mothers say they lack emotional support, encouragement, and empathy.
  • At least ⅔ of sexually active women who wish to avoid pregnancy don’t rely on contraception due to concerns over how the options affect their health.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth complications, already on the rise, have increased since 2020 as medical and personal intervention have decreased due to pandemic challenges.
  • Substance abuse, depression, and lack of self-worth during and immediately after pregnancy have grown exponentially.

What is a mentor?
Mentors are not:
  • Trained to offer specific medical advice
  • Family members
  • Judgmental
  • Paid
  • All-knowing
  • Allowed to give money or items
  • Required to do anything they’re not comfortable doing
Mentors are:
  • Kind
  • Listeners
  • Confidential
  • Willing to find answers
  • Respectful of decisions
  • Available at reasonable times
  • Willing to share from their life experiences
